Like many partnerships, we have a division of labor over here at L&L. Neither of us has to take out the garbage, thank GOD. Loomis covers all things décor and travel (I step on her toes a bit there), and I’m on call for fitness and wellness.
(We are much better at doing this than taking out the garbage.)
So, as your resident health nut, this Tuesday I wanted to share my Top 10 small changes you can make to “clean up” your act. Remember, big changes start small.
1 Swap out your deodorant – We are legit sweaty people in my house, and we have tried just about all the safer deodorants. Native is hands-down our fave (and not just because it comes in a Rosé scent.)
Aluminum-free, paraben-free, made in the USA and Sullivan approved. As they say:
Deodorant is applied daily on a sensitive area of your body.
Make sure you understand what’s in your deodorant.
2 Try meditation (again) – I just finished Dan Harris’s book 10 Percent Happier and it’s fantastic. Who wouldn’t want to be 10% happier?
3 Switch to a safer body wash, body lotion and shampoo – These items are used daily (I hope!) and by all your family members. This small change is an impactful, lower cost way to lessen your toxic load.
4 Easy on the fast fashion – I know. This one actually pains me. But, I’m working on it. Our fearless Beautycounter leader challenged us to rethink it due to its negative impact on society. Check out truecostmovie.com on Netflix to learn more.
Cuyana is an example of a company that is doing things right in that department.
5 Lessen the toxic load on your lips – Trust me, you do not want even trace amounts of phthalates (potential endocrine disruptors) on your pretty little lips. Switch to a safer lipstick that is still gorgeous and scented only with natural vanilla.
6 Make friends with your reusable water bottle – I will not let this one go! I will not rest until every L&L reader is toting a reusable water bottle on the daily.
7 Avoid perfume – Fragrance can contain synthetic fragrances, many of which are common allergens or have links to hormone disruption. I am currently obsessed with the smell of the essential oil blend Chill Pill (and, obviously, I need one. Or two.)
8 Get clarity – Gotta say I’ve been digging The Clarity Cleanse (more than Judgement Detox), and it’s not just the GP factor.
9 Pick a good sunscreen – Go for one with non-nano zinc oxide. It’s better for you and for the environment (don’t even get me started on spray sunscreen!) The EWG provides a very thorough Guide to Safer Sunscreens which is worth checking out.
10 Ditch the straws – They aren’t recyclable and, they’re the fifth most common form of trash picked up off coastlines. They pose a threat to wildlife as well. Have I beat you down yet? The next time you eat out at a restaurants, ask your server to hold the straw. For at home, check out this lengthy list of alternatives
