Annie and I can tell our tales
of complete 20 something debauchery of NYC all day Long (pun intended) but no one can tell the true story of New Yorkers quite like Brandon Stanton, famed creator of blog turned book, Humans of New York.
Through Brandon’s lens and interviews – he captures the indomitable spirit of the human race. He started in New York but has gone on to document other areas, as well. I’ve learned something from each and every one of them.
My first intro to HONY was when my brother gifted me the original book for Christmas a few years ago.
Flash forward a few years and my sister had his second book on her Christmas wishlist. I inscribed it “to my favorite human of New York”. She wound up getting two copies so she gifted the non-inscribed one back to me. It was the last gift I would ever give or receive from Genine.
So it goes without saying this dude has delivered some serious feels.
In my former life
ADD blogger, in June of 2014, I wrote a Valentine to Brandon including some of my faves. Check them out here. They all still make me laugh and/or cry and I of course I have some new ones to add.
One particular series that is not for the faint of heart but particularly resonated with me is the Pediatric Cancer Series from May 2016 : Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. If you happen to happen a box of tissues nearby, please take some time to read these heroic stories of doctors, nurses, and patients.
. . . and of course my all time fave . . .
Thank you again, Brandon, for bringing these inspiring, silly, heart-wrenching and down-right beautiful stories to light. God, I love New York and the humans who call it home.
and everyone you love in life should have these books . . .
